Technological watchmaking? Traditional craftsmanship? What a divine combination!
Having discussed this with fellow watch enthusiasts many times, I believe the Freak S is Ulysse Nardin's most interesting, dazzling, and visually striking creation to date. Ulysse Nardin has designed the entire movement as a spaceship, seamlessly blending sci-fi aesthetics with mechanical beauty. Now, Ulysse Nardin has further expanded the design direction of the Freak S. Following the Freak S NOMAD, which incorporates exquisite guilloché engraving showcasing meticulous handcraftsmanship, the recently launched Freak S ENAMEL, which masterfully fuses classic guilloché with top-tier enamel techniques, creating a unique artistic spark.
The complexity of the Freak S watch, needless to say, is concentrated in two aspects: its functional complexity and its decorative craftsmanship. With this new series, Ulysse Nardin once again sets a trend in watchmaking by blending traditional craftsmanship with modern avant-garde design, leading the entire watch industry in pushing the boundaries of tradition and innovation.

The Freak S Enamel watch retains the consistent 45mm case diameter of the Freak S series, but its materials differ significantly from the previous rose gold launch and the gold-plated NOMAD Voyager watch. This time, instead of using a combination of multiple innovative materials, it directly uses titanium for the case, bezel locking mechanism, and case back, giving it a visually appealing silver-grey hue that further enhances its modern technological feel.
Furthermore, using titanium for the case has a very direct advantage: the 45mm case weighs only around 110 grams. Combined with Ulysse Nardin's ergonomic design, such as optimized lug design, it provides excellent wearing comfort from the moment you put it on. The case side also retains Ulysse Nardin's classic nameplate design; the "50" indicates that this watch is limited to only 50 pieces worldwide.
The FREAK S ENAMEL watch also adheres to the FREAK series' "three-no" design: no dial, no hands, and no crown. The crownless design not only makes the streamlined sides of the case seamless but also allows the bezel of this flagship FREAK model to be used for time adjustment. Unlocking the cover at 6 o'clock below the bezel allows you to rotate the bezel to complete the adjustment.
The Ulysse Nardin Freak S Enamel watch is currently available in two color options: deep crimson and neon blue enamel. Both watches feature guilloché enamel dials crafted by Ulysse Nardin's Donzé Cadrans SA enamel workshop. The guilloché enamel technique is particularly meticulous. First, a master guilloché artist operates a rose loom to meticulously carve delicate textures onto a gold base. After carving, enamel masters hand-apply layers of enamel glaze evenly, before repeatedly firing the dial in a kiln at approximately 800°C. This multi-layered, complex process makes the creation extremely difficult, representing Ulysse Nardin's ultimate expression of watchmaking aesthetics and craftsmanship. The final result is a dial with a deep, rich enamel color and a mirror-like sheen. The neon blue enamel also visually transforms with subtle color gradations from blue, yellow, and cyan, shifting with the light.
On the enamel dial, Ulysse Nardin has sculpted the entire carousel movement into the shape of a spaceship, contrasting beautifully with the shimmering neon blue guilloché enamel dial. This design combines the artistic beauty of traditional craftsmanship with a futuristic, futuristic mechanical aesthetic. The large carousel mechanism rotates once per hour, with the minute hand transforming into the bow of a warship to indicate the time, while the hour hand is indicated by the rotating lower hour markers. The double balance wheels and escapement are integrated into the rear half of the carousel movement; when these mechanical components combine, they resemble the powerful thrusters of a spaceship. Ulysse Nardin has also broken watchmaking records with the world's smallest vertical differential, precisely connecting the two silicon balance wheels to effectively average out the running error between them, further enhancing the watch's accuracy and reliability.
The UN-251 movement features the highly efficient Grinder® automatic winding system. This winding system is crafted from a single piece of silicon and enhanced with DIAMONSIL diamond silicon crystal technology. Ulysse Nardin leverages silicon's inherent low-friction and constant elasticity, combined with a symmetrical four-pawl design, to precisely detect and respond to even the slightest wrist movements, efficiently converting kinetic energy into the energy reserve needed for the movement. Ulysse Nardin states that this represents a twofold improvement over traditional winding structures, and the movement, when fully wound, provides a power reserve of up to 72 hours, easily meeting the needs of everyday wear.

The watch comes with a charcoal gray "ballistic" textured rubber strap with a titanium folding clasp.
The Ulysse Nardin Freak collection is a representative work of 21st-century watchmaking technology, and its groundbreaking application of silicon has rewritten the development of the watchmaking industry. The new FREAK S ENAMEL watch, with its spaceship-like carousel movement, embodies a futuristic technological feel, combining cutting-edge watchmaking technology with modern cutting-edge design. This is perfectly complemented by the interplay of light and shadow created by the traditional guilloché enamel technique. Tradition and innovation are not contradictory; Ulysse Nardin has truly mastered this, achieving a harmonious and mutually reinforcing relationship. The watch's extreme complexity is also hidden in every aspect of its craftsmanship and movement finishing. Whether it's the guilloché enamel, the carousel movement, the silicon material, or the ingenious design of the double balance wheel, the essence is the pursuit of perfection. This rarity makes it a timepiece exclusively for seasoned watch collectors, but even with its high entry barrier, it doesn't prevent us from appreciating and exploring the charm of Ulysse Nardin's watchmaking, which combines traditional craftsmanship with pioneering technology.
