In January of 2006 the Sheikh Mohammed was appointed the ruler of Dubai. The announcement came just a few days after his older brother, Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum died. He was elected the as the ruler of Dubai in January 2006, just following the passing of his brother, Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Maktoum. At the age of four The Sheikh was enrolled in private tuition at the age of 4 in Islamic as well as Arabic. As he grew older in school, he pursued his studies in the English Language College in England. His son, Sheikh Hamdan, was an Sandhurst Army Academy graduate and also graduated from the London College of Economics.

Heikh Mohammed is, in his capacity as the ruler of Dubai is also the United Arab Emirate's Vice-President and Prime Minister. Sheikh Mohammed is also responsible for other duties in addition to his duties as the ruler of Dubai. The Sheikh and his ministers are accountable for the implementation of the common policy of the Federal Government in and out of the UAE in accordance with the UAE constitution. He is accountable for providing directives to ministers on matters of government and supervising and coordinating the executive authorities of the federal government's agencies and ministries. As Vice President of the UAE is also required to fulfill the duties as President of UAE in the event that he is not available.
