Understated is not a word normally linked to the wedding dress institution, but it is a trend currently overtaking aisles. Brides are trading showy, dramatic gowns in support of comfort and private style, and couples are opting for over-the-top receptions, rather than going for nature-inspired, casually elegant fêtes, customized to reflect who they are.
And the pared-down approach appears to be imported from—where else?—France. Nobody does effortless chic such as the French, and also the move to trim away the overly showy and "loud" elements to pay attention to comfort, functionality, and private style has taken a slew of French bridal designers to the attention of American brides.
"There’s a particular laid-back simplicity that characterizes French bridal style versus over-embellished and fussy styles that may oftentimes characterize the US bridal market," says Marisa. "French bridal style is all about exuding a feeling of chic confidence. Styles aren't over-the-top or risqué—less is much more."
"We were hoping to find a line which was chic, cool, seductive, and relaxed, which may be difficult to find inside vintage wedding dresses," Marisa adds. "There a multitude of thoughtful details that characterize feel times' aesthetic, like plunging necklines, low backs combined with free-flowing skirts, and unique lace and embroidered silks which are on another level."
