Globalization
Globalization is a concept that still has neither a universal definition nor an effective approach towards it. Currently, numerous scholars can only try to explain it with the application of various perspectives. The majority of experts see this concept through the neoliberalism point of view and outline its positive effect. However, in his article, Jason Pribilsky takes the opposite side and demonstrates the negative influence of these phenomena using the example of Arturo, an American immigrant from Ecuador. Describing Arturo’s native village, the author outlines that local boys are obsessed with America because it gives them opportunities. For these people, opportunities mean money and material pleasures. Such a philosophy is a result of the neoliberalism ideology that emphasizes market economy and ignores creative and emotional aspects.
I can see the influence of this ideology on my own life. All my friends like to talk about new smartphones, tablets, or computer devices. The obsession with material possessions became widespread in the modern American society. Such a state of affairs does not mean that globalization is a negative phenomenon. In fact, it provides numerous opportunities. For example, I can find out what is happening on the other continent in two clicks. Moreover, I can travel almost to any part of the world without problems. Finally, I am free to choose my future according to my desires. However, the current domination of market economy means that neoliberalism does not work. Pribilsky demonstrates how immigration to America and the return back increases the gap between rich and poor local people. Such stratification ruins village communities, giving opportunities to some individuals and destroying the lives of others. I see that low-income neighborhoods have a negative attitude towards more fashionable ones.
It not only breaks the unity of the American nation but also results in a growing number of crimes. Therefore, I can say that globalization brought many positive changes to my life, and I believe that it will continue to positively influence my life in the future. However, I feel that neoliberalism is an absolutely ineffective approach, and humanity requires an alternative perspective.
